About Curling

Curling a game of ice and stones, a game of tactics, but more important a game to be enjoyed.

Curling in Scotland is a growing sport – thanks to the efforts of our Olympic Teams, but also in no small part to the effort of coaching - directed at Schools.

The game is played (almost exclusively indoors), on a specially marked sheet of ice.   We are most fortunate in East Kilbride to have access to a local Ice Rink in East Kilbride Town Centre, offering top quality curling ice.

Two Teams, of 4 players a side, take alternate turns to deliver two curling stones each along the sheet which measures some 150 feet long by 14 feet wide.

The object of the game is to slide your stone down the ice so that it stops in the centre of a ‘bulls eye’ type target.  The fun and strategy comes in as your opponents seek to remove your ‘shot’ stone, while you and your team try to throw stones which ‘guard’ or improve on your advantage.

A great deal of skill also comes into the game in the art of 'brushing', where sweeping in front of the stone by members of your team, is used to make it go further and keep straighter.

Red are 'holding shot' - while 'yellow' have two stones in the 'house'

the one 'red'  stone is winning as it is closest to the centre of the target

often referred to as the 'pot lid'!

There are masses of Curling Websites, many of which provide details of rules, history, and explain the game we play in more detail, so we don’t intend to re-invent the wheel here.

If you want a quick overview have a look at this Introduction Overview

If you are keen to find out more about this historic sport with its many traditions then do your own research, by visiting some of the Websites listed in our 'Links' page.

To properly understand what ‘grabs’ a curler, you need to come and play and experience for yourself why we love heaving rocks down the ice.  The history and culture of the game - well you will pick this up.  What is important is if you have any notion of giving Curling a try - then we can accommodate you and coaching is free!

Young and old welcome – you do not need lots of special equipment – stones and brushes are supplied by the Ice Rink.
